SHIP ON SEAL OF TIRYNS TREASURE

Great Palace. The deposit, belonging to the Second Late Minoan Period,
contained numerous inscriptions relating to chariots and their parts such as
are associated with horses' heads showing the same tufted manes as that of
the horse in Fig. 141, a. This seal-impression is clearly dated to the last
half of the fifteenth century p.. c.

Mycenaean Greece supplies two later delineations of vessels which Type of
carry still farther the story of Minoan naval construction. Among the |^°r"m
early elements of theTiryns Treasure, of a date contemporary with the earlier Tiryns

and ministering Genu described below, was a smaller ring of the same on bark.

material presenting an animated subject, the principal elements of which are

clear, though the worn state of the surface prevents us from recognizing

some of the details. Fig. 142 2 will give a sufficient idea of this composition

which in its dramatic movement may compare with episodes on the Thisbe'

intaglios that have supplied Minoan versions of the story of Oedipus and the Deck

Sphinx and of the vengeance of Orestes.3 In some ways they present even Cabln-

a nearer parallel with the scenes on the ' Ring of Nestor'. The ship seen

on the left shows a cabin placed somewhat behind its centre, with a mast

rising above it and rigging attached. The rowers, of which there seem from

the number of the oars to have been four, are not given, but within the cabin
