568 LARGE SEAL-IMPRESSION WITH 'CATTLE PIECES'

Entrance passage at Knossos. Two walking oxen are here seen abo
a cornice, the centre of which is supported by the capital of a pilaster whil
on either side of this are two bull's heads (Fig. 512 a).1

This frieze recalls that on an agate lentoid, here repeated (Fig. 549 a
representing the sacrifice of an ox above the slab of an altar, the face of
which shows small pilasters, alternating with bucrania rather than simple
ox-heads.2 Above is a bending palm-tree of a fully conventionalized style
and indicative of a late date.

1 They somewhat resemble the heads of
horned sheep, but facing bull's heads of this
type are also known.

' See above, p. 41, Fig. 24. The true
character of the frieze below was first recognized

in my Scripta Miuoa, i, p. 196, Fig. 90, in
connexion with the 'bucranium' hieroglyph.
The gem is in the Berlin Museum (Furhv,
Cat, PI. I, 22 ; cf. A. G., PI. II, 22V
